The American Legion Post 43 in La Grande is serving up hamburgers every Tuesday night from 5PM – 7PM. Stop in for the hamburgers, and enjoy live music too. The public is welcome to come down to 301 Fir Street in La Grande each week to participate.

Help is being requested for this year’s La Grande Lions Club “Coats For Kids” and La Grande Soroptimist “Boots-n-Socks for Kids” drive. Clean, warm winter articles will be collected through Friday, October 26th. Drop boxes are set up at each school office in La Grande School District. Distribution of these clothing items will take place on Saturday, October 27th and Saturday, November 3rd. From 9AM – 12PM, families can come down to Riveria Activity Center at 2609 N. Second St. in La Grande to find a coat, boots, and socks, that fit their children.

Veterans of Foreign Wars High Valley Post 4060 is holding Bingo each Wednesday, at the VFW Hall in Union. The doors will open at 5PM, with early bird games starting at 6PM, and regular games at 7PM. For more information, contact Cora, at 541-562-6153.

The Meals on Wheels program in Union County is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to seniors at their homes. The time investment is only about two hours per week. The American Legion Post 43 in La Grande holds Bingo Thursday evenings, with Early Bird games starting at 6PM, and a second session beginning at 7PM. Jackpots start at $100 and $250, and a 50/50 raffle will also be available. The public is welcome to come down to 301 Fir Street in La Grande each week to participate. The Cook Memorial Library’s Literacy Center is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in La Grande. From 1:30PM – 5PM, devoted volunteers assist any individual that needs help in all areas of reading, writing, and speaking. There are opportunities to connect with reading partners, develop reading and language skills, and even help with homework for students. This is a perfect opportunity for all ages to receive free help in these literacy skills, or even for someone you care for. Volunteers are being sought after to participate in multiple training sessions for the upcoming Union County Warming Station. As preparation is underway to bring vulnerable community members in from the cold, attend the volunteer trainings to learn about what you can do to be a part of the solution. Rehearsals are underway in La Grande for a community performance of Handel’s “Messiah”. Anyone interested in singing during the performance, scheduled for December 16th, is encouraged to attend the rehearsals each Sunday evening at 1802 Gekeler Ln, from 5PM – 8PM. Elkhorn Community Preparedness in Baker City hosts a monthly meeting at the Sunridge Inn, on the third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be held at 6:30PM on October 16th. All Baker County residents are welcome to attend the meeting.

Wildflower Lodge Assisted Living in La Grande holds their Dementia Support Groups on the first and third Wednesday of each month. The Dementia Support Groups are free to attend, and the next one will take place at 12PM on Wednesday, October 17th, at Wildflower Lodge. La Grande Parks & Recreation Department will be holding a Zombie 5K Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, October 20th. The starting and finish line will be at the Meridell Center in Downtown La Grande. Registration will open up at 9:30AM that morning, with the race starting at 10AM. The cost is just $15 if you register in advance, and $20 per person on the day of. Every Monday through Friday the Community Connection Senior Dining Center in Baker City serves up lunch at 11:30AM. There is a suggested donation of $4.50 for persons 60 and over, and a cost of $6.25 for persons under 60. Stop by Community Connection of Baker County, located at 2810 Cedar St. in Baker City to take a look at the menu and see what else is offered.

Grande Ronde Radio Amateurs Association is inviting everyone to attend their monthly business meeting every 4th Tuesday of the month. The meeting is held at the La Grande Fire Station classroom, starting at 6PM. If you have ever been interested in HAM radio, or are curious about it, this is a great meeting to attend to ask questions about the hobby and the service.
