The American Legion Post 43 in La Grande is serving up hamburgers every Tuesday night from 5PM – 7PM. Stop in for the hamburgers, and enjoy live music too. The public is welcome to come down to 301 Fir Street in La Grande each week to participate.
The OSU Master Gardener program is a great chance to expand your gardening knowledge. These classes are held each Tuesday, now through the end of April, at the OSU Extension office in Union County, located at 10507 N. McAlister Road. Community members are invited to take any of these classes, for just $5 per class. The Elgin Lions Club holds Bingo each Wednesday evening at the Elgin Community Center. Doors open at 6PM, and play starts at 6:30PM. Concessions will also be available.
Every Monday through Friday the Community Connection Senior Dining Center in Baker City serves up lunch at 11:30AM. There is a suggested donation of $4.50 for persons 60 and over, and a cost of $6.25 for persons under 60. The Meals on Wheels program in Union County is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to seniors at their homes. The time investment is only about two hours per week. The Cook Memorial Library’s Literacy Center is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in La Grande. From 1:30PM – 5PM, devoted volunteers assist any individual that needs help in all areas of reading, writing, and speaking. There are opportunities to connect with reading partners, develop reading and language skills, and even help with homework for students. This is a perfect opportunity for all ages to receive free help in these literacy skills, or even for someone you care for. La Grande Optimist Club is holding their free annual fishing derby at Morgan Lake on Saturday, April 28th. The derby will be held from 8AM to 3PM and everyone under sixteen can fish for free. Wildflower Lodge Assisted Living in La Grande holds their Dementia Support Groups on the first and third Wednesday of each month. The Baker City Christian Women’s Connection is having a brunch on Saturday May 5th. This brunch will be held at Community Connections, located at 2810 Cedar St. in Baker City, beginning at 10AM. Guest speaker Anita Nelson will be sharing how to “Hang On So You Can Let Go”, special music will be provided by Kelly Nichols, and Doug Dalton will be highlighting upcoming classes at Baker Technical Institute. Elkhorn Community Preparedness in Baker City hosts a monthly meeting at Best Western Sunridge Inn, on the third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be held at 6:30PM on April 17th. All Baker County residents are welcome to attend the meeting.
There will be another AARP “Smart Driver” Safety Class, on Saturday, May 19th, at Grande Ronde Hospital. The class will take place from 9AM – 4PM, and will be taught by certified volunteer instructor, Fred Moore. Completion of the class entitles drivers to a discount in their auto insurance in most cases. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.
